Why You Cannot Sleep, and How Temperature Quietly Runs the Whole Thing
The most overlooked lever in sleep is not a supplement or a screen habit. It is your body temperature, and cold and heat move it more than almost anything else.

Poor sleep is one of the most common things people write to me about, and it is one of the defining struggles of the menopause transition and of any stretch of high stress. Most of the advice you have heard is about screens, caffeine, and routine. All useful. But it skips the single most powerful lever there is, and it is one I have spent years studying: temperature.
Your sleep is governed by heat. Not metaphorically. Mechanically.
The mechanism almost no one explains
Your core body temperature runs on a daily rhythm. In the evening, a couple of hours before you normally fall asleep, it begins to drop. That fall is not a side effect of getting sleepy. It is one of the primary signals your brain uses to start sleep in the first place.
This is why a hot bedroom wrecks your sleep, and why you toss the covers off in the night. If your body cannot shed heat and let core temperature fall, the sleep signal is muted. Sleep becomes shallow and broken.
Understand that, and a lot of confusing advice suddenly makes sense, including the advice that gets cold and heat exactly backwards.
Why heat before bed helps, even though it sounds wrong
Here is the part that surprises people. A sauna, a hot bath, or a hot shower in the one to two hours before bed helps you sleep, and it helps through cooling.
When you heat your body, blood rushes to the surface of the skin. When you get out, that dilated skin sheds heat rapidly, and your core temperature drops faster and lower than it otherwise would. You have exaggerated the natural evening temperature fall, and handed your brain a stronger sleep signal.
The evidence here is unusually consistent. A 2019 meta-analysis in Sleep Medicine Reviews found that passive body heating before bed shortened the time to fall asleep and improved sleep quality. For women whose sleep is fragmented by night sweats and a raised nighttime temperature during menopause, this mechanism is directly relevant.
The key is timing. The benefit is in the cooldown, so you finish the heat 60 to 90 minutes before bed, not as you climb in still flushed and warm. Warm while you still have time to cool.
And why cold before bed can backfire
Now the correction, because this is where the internet gets it wrong and it is pure Proof Gap territory.
Cold is one of my central subjects, and I love what it does. But cold late in the evening is often the wrong tool for sleep. A cold plunge is stimulating by design. It fires your sympathetic nervous system, releases noradrenaline, and raises alertness. That is exactly what you want in the morning, and exactly what you do not want at 10pm.
There is also a temperature twist. After brief intense cold, your body works to rewarm itself, which can nudge core temperature up at the very moment you want it falling. So the same cold practice that sharpens you in the morning can quietly hold sleep at arm’s length at night.
This is not cold being bad. It is cold being powerful, and powerful tools have a right time. For sleep, that time is earlier in the day.
What this means for stress and menopause

Stress and a dysregulated nervous system make it harder for your body to complete that evening temperature drop, because you are still in a low-grade state of activation. And in menopause, a raised nighttime core temperature and night sweats attack the exact mechanism sleep depends on. So the temperature lever is not a minor tip for these readers. It may be the most useful one there is.
