We have all noticed that the bread basket is often one of the first things to arrive at the table when dining out! But why? I think about this almost every time, which has started a debates around the table between me and my family, while we were on holiday this summer. Do you know why? It’s odd - as much in this world is not just FREE. So the question is legit - WHY?
Offering complimentary bread to diners has become a common culinary tradition.
It seems that there has been much debate about this practice. Some argue it is a marketing tactic, while others believe it is a hospitable gesture.
Based on my research, it’s not that simple. In reality, there are multiple reasons why restaurants offer free bread to their customers. It took some research, but I’m happy that I ended up finding scientifically proven reasons too. And one of these reasons, surprised me a lot - it seems there is so much thought put into this nice gesture of “free bread”.
I will explain the key reasons why bread is served free of charge at restaurants and what you need to do instead of eating it.
