GLP-1 - What is it and What Happens in the Body When We Eat?
Today, we are going to explore a hormone, which you might have heard about from weight loss drugs: GLP-1! Now, you might be wondering what exactly GLP-1 is and why we should care. Well, let me tell you - this little hormone plays a crucial role in our body's response to food.
Before we discuss the details of GLP-1, let's take a step back and remember what happens in our bodies when we eat. It's not just about satisfying our hunger or cravings—every bite triggers a complex chain of events within our body that ultimately determines how efficiently we process and utilize the nutrients from our food- and GLP-1 is an essential player in this process.
Let's begin by understanding the basics.
What is GLP-1?
GLP-1, short for Glucagon-like peptide-1, is a hormone produced by specialized cells in our intestines called L-cells. As the name suggests, GLP-1 has similar functions to another hormone called glucagon, which helps regulate blood sugar levels.
But unlike glucagon, GLP-1's primary role is to regulate our metabolism and appetite. When we eat food, especially carbohydrates and proteins, our body releases GLP-1 into the bloodstream. This hormone then travels to different organs and tissues in our body, triggering a cascade of events that help us digest and process the food we have consumed.
One of GLP-1's key actions is stimulating insulin release from the pancreas. As we know, insulin plays a crucial role in regulating blood sugar levels by allowing glucose (sugar) into our cells for energy or storage. GLP-1 also suppresses another hormone called glucagon, which signals the liver to produce and release more glucose into the bloodstream.
