What is Fibromyalgia?
Fibromyalgia is a complex disorder that affects the central nervous system, causing widespread pain and sensitivity throughout the body. It is a condition that primarily affects the muscles and their attachments to bones.
People with fibromyalgia often experience pain and tenderness in specific tender points, typically around joints. These tender points can be found in the neck, shoulders, back, hips, arms, and legs.
What are Possible Causes of Fibromyalgia?
The exact cause of fibromyalgia is still unknown. However, researchers believe a combination of factors may contribute to its development.
An interesting study by Penny J Furness and colleagues, aimed to find out the causes of fibromyalgia through the perception of individuals living with the condition. The study highlighted that the etiology of fibromyalgia is complex and multifaceted, with various factors potentially contributing to its development.
These include:
Physical Trauma: Many participants in the study reported a physical injury preceding the onset of their fibromyalgia symptoms. This included accidents, injuries from work or exercise, and medical procedures.
