Elevate Your Expertise with the Thermalist® Method
Over the past few years, I’ve developed a certification program for professionals who want to bring a science-backed workshop for their costumers/clients for stress reduction and metabolic health.
Our mission is clear: to help prevent stress and lifestyle diseases with a practical, research-based workshop - by Dr. Susanna Søberg.
After a highly successful launch earlier this year—focusing on contrast therapy and functional breathing—we received incredible feedback on the program’s depth, structure, and resources. Now, we’ve made it even better, enhancing safety and quality.
We’ve also gathered thoughtful testimonials from participants, sharing their experiences and insights. You can explore them in the link below and learn more about the certification program on our website.
Join Us for Our Next certification workshop. The In-Person Workshop is April 11–13, 2025
(only a few seats left - new dates are coming for September/October)
The Science-Backed Thermalist Method
The Thermalist Method is built on my own research as well as that of other scientists. By incorporating their findings and interviewing experts, I aim to help Thermalist Method instructors develop a deeper understanding of the body and mind, enabling them to deliver the best practices in real-life (IRL) settings with my specific method - one that is healthy and science-backed.
I strongly believe that effective science teaching involves working backward from what people already accept and understand. It requires not just a library of research but also the ability to connect the dots to teach safe and beneficial practices. That’s why this program is rooted in a broad base of research and enriched by conversations with experts.
Collaborating with Scientists and Experts
To create the Thermalist Method Workshop, I worked with fellow scientists to curate manuscripts and select key science topics. I also included interviews between me and other experts to share diverse perspectives. The goal is to foster a nuanced understanding of cold exposure, heat therapy, and breathwork for health, giving instructors valuable insights from these conversations.
Thermalist Method in Real Life (IRL)
As both a teacher and a scientist, it’s incredibly rewarding to witness others learn and grow. We want to ensure that every Thermalist Method Workshop (TMW) instructor is well-versed in the workshop protocol. The in-person workshop is the ideal opportunity to practice, rehearse, and align with the method for a hands-on, immersive experience.
Why Our Science-Backed Approach Matters
“Feeling” Versus Science
You’ve probably heard many online experts say, “Just listen to your body.” While that advice has its place, relying solely on feelings or guessing isn’t always a reliable guide. Science has consistently led the way to better health, offering clarity in areas like exercise, eating behavior, cravings, and food science.
If our bodies’ “feelings” were always right, we might eat sugar all day long. Fortunately, science teaches us otherwise and helps us make informed decisions.
A Real Example from My DM’s
Here’s a message I received:
"Susanna, I just listened to my body, and it didn’t tell me to get out of the ice water after 20 minutes. Then I couldn’t move my legs. What happened?”
This DM highlights a potentially dangerous situation. Without guidance grounded in science, we risk pushing our limits in ways that harm us rather than help us.
Science Leads the Way
Science provides general principles and rules to help us navigate toward better health. For example, adapting to cold and heat exposure is a process, much like following an exercise program. It’s not just about “feeling” your way through—it’s about structured, informed practice.
This is exactly what we teach in the Thermalist Method Workshop. By combining scientific insights with hands-on experience, we guide you through a safe and effective approach to stress adaptation: stress up to stress down.

The Triple Play for Optimal Health
Cold Water Immersion, Sauna, and Healthy Breathing - The Three Pillars in the Thermalist Method.
Why do I remain dedicated to these forms of exercise and advocate for them? Because, in the right proportions, they possess the unique ability to repair and reset our stressed bodies and minds, rivaling the benefits of traditional exercise. These diverse fitness modalities work synergistically, standing out as the ideal combination for mitigating inflammation and counteracting the effects of chronic stress.
In the pursuit of comprehensive health, individuals are increasingly embracing ancient practices that tap into the potential of natural elements. Cold water immersion, sauna sessions, and mindful breathing are emerging as a trinity of activities that contribute to overall well-being.
Below, I share some of the key benefits derived from Thermalist Method Instructor certification program:
Module 1
Cold Exposure and contrast therapy: Some of the Benefits…
Enhanced Immune Response: Research suggests that exposure to cold water stimulates the immune system, leading to an increase in disease-fighting white blood cells. Daily cold showers or plunges have been linked to improved immune function, potentially bolstering the body's defenses against infections.
Optimized Metabolism: Cold exposure induces a metabolic boost as the body works to generate heat. This heightened metabolic rate, increased energy expenditure, clearing glucose from the bloodstream and supporting overall metabolic health.
Anti-Inflammatory Effects: Cold therapy has been shown to reduce inflammation by activating pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines and heat shock proteins. These proteins aid in proper protein folding, mitigating inflammation-related issues and promoting cellular health.
Activation of Brown Fat: Brown adipose tissue (BAT), also known as brown fat, is a type of fat tissue that generates heat by burning calories. Exposure to cold conditions, such as in contrast therapy, can activate brown fat. When brown fat is activated, it utilizes glucose and fatty acids to generate heat, contributing to increased energy expenditure.
Enhanced Cellular Function: The stressors from hot and cold exposures activate cellular stress response pathways. This activation can lead to the production of heat shock proteins and other cellular adaptations that contribute to cellular health. Healthy functioning cells are more efficient in carrying out metabolic processes.
Improved Insulin Sensitivity: Studies show that thermal therapy, including both heat and cold exposure, may improve insulin sensitivity. Enhanced insulin sensitivity means that cells respond more effectively to insulin, which plays a crucial role in glucose metabolism and energy regulation.
Module 2
Heat Exposure: Some of the Benefits…
Heat Shock Proteins and Cellular Metabolism: Sauna exposure induces the production of heat shock proteins (HSPs), which play a role in cellular protection and repair. These proteins assist in maintaining the proper folding of cellular proteins, reducing the impact of stress and inflammation on cells. This cellular maintenance can positively influence metabolic processes.
Cardiovascular Health: Regular sauna use has been associated with improved cardiovascular function. The heat promotes blood vessel dilation, enhances blood flow, and contributes to lower blood pressure over time.
Stress Reduction: Sauna sessions offer a sanctuary for relaxation. The heat prompts the release of endorphins, the body's natural stress relievers, fostering a sense of calm and well-being.
Module 3
The power of healthy breathing: Some of the Benefits…
Stress Reduction and Mindfulness: Mindful breathing techniques, such as deep diaphragmatic breathing, are effective in reducing stress and promoting mindfulness. These practices contribute to mental clarity and emotional well-being.
Improved Lung Function: Conscious breathing exercises enhance lung capacity and respiratory efficiency. This can be particularly beneficial for individuals with respiratory conditions and those looking to optimize athletic performance.
Balanced Autonomic Nervous System: Mindful breathing helps balance the autonomic nervous system, fostering equilibrium between the sympathetic (fight-or-flight) and parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) branches. This balance is crucial for overall health and resilience.
Healthy breathing techniques for different purposes: Healthy breathing techniques serve various purposes and can be tailored to specific needs. These needs can be for energy boost, increased focus, for mental clarity, for better sleep, to lower stress acutely etc.
